Ingredients
- 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp active dry yeast
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ cup warm water
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- 1
In a small bowl, dissolve the 1 tbsp yeast and 1 tbsp of the sugar in the 0.5 cup warm water. Let sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.

In a large bowl, mix the 2.5 cups flour, remaining 3 tbsp sugar, and 1 tsp salt. Cut in the 0.25 cup butter until crumbly.

Add the yeast mixture, 0.5 cup milk, and 1 egg to the flour. Stir until a soft dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled, about 1 hour.
- 5
Punch down the dough, shape into a round roll, and place on a baking sheet. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
- 6
Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake the roll for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
