Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1.25 cups warm water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, dissolve the 1 tbsp yeast and 1 tbsp of the sugar in the 1.25 cups warm water. Let sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.

  2. 2

Stir in the remaining sugar, 1 tsp salt, and 2 tbsp melted butter. Add the 3 cups flour and mix until a shaggy dough forms.

  3. 3

Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.

  4. 4

Punch down the dough and knead in the 1 cup raisins until evenly distributed. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan.

  5. 5

Cover and let rise again until puffy, about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  6. 6

Bake the bread until golden brown and hollow when tapped, about 30 minutes. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
