Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 whole large egg
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, mix 2 cups flour and 1 tsp salt. Make a well and add 1 egg and 0.5 cup water; stir until a shaggy dough forms.

  2. 2

Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth, about 5 minutes. Cover with a towel and let rest for 10 minutes.

  3. 3

Roll dough into a 1/4-inch thick sheet. Cut into 2-inch squares or circles using a knife or cookie cutter.

  4. 4

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Drop in the dough pieces in batches; cook until they float and are tender, about 3-4 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon.

  5. 5

In a skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter over medium heat. Add 1 sliced onion and cook until soft and golden, about 8 minutes.

  6. 6

Toss the cooked dumplings with the onion butter. Serve warm, with extra butter or sour cream if desired.
