Ingredients

  • 1 lb beef sirloin or tenderloin, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tbsp ginger, peeled and minced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp berbere spice blend
  • 2 cups cooked rice (white or brown)
  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced into wedges
  • 1 medium red onion, sliced thin
  • 1 tbsp chili peppers, fresh (or dried red chili flakes)

Instructions

  1. 1

Pat beef dry. Mix ginger, garlic, berbere, and chili into a paste with 1 tbsp water and 2 tbsp oil.

  2. 2

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium-high until it shimmers, about 1 minute.

  3. 3

Add beef in a single layer. Sear without moving for 2 minutes until browned, then stir and cook 2 minutes more.

  4. 4

Add the spice paste and toss beef to coat evenly. Cook for 2 minutes until fragrant and beef is cooked through.

  5. 5

Warm rice in the skillet alongside the beef, stirring gently, for 1 minute.

  6. 6

Plate the awaze beef and rice, then arrange fresh tomato wedges and raw onion slices alongside. Serve hot.
