Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples (Granny Smith or Bramley), cored and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 6 tablespoons butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  1. 1

Set the oven to 400°F and wait until the indicator light or beep signals it has finished preheating, about 10 minutes.

  2. 2

Place each cored apple on a cutting board and slice downward from top to bottom into 1/4-inch-thick slices, like slicing bread.

  3. 3

Spread the apple slices across the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking dish, arranging them in an even layer.

  4. 4

Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar and 0.5 teaspoon of ground cinnamon evenly over the apple layer.

  5. 5

Pour 1 cup of rolled oats and 0.5 cup of all-purpose flour into a medium bowl and mix together with a fork until combined.

  6. 6

Add 6 tablespoons of cold butter cubes to the oat mixture and use your fingers to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture looks like coarse breadcrumbs with pea-sized lumps throughout.

  7. 7

Spread the crumble mixture evenly across the top of the apples in a single layer, pressing gently so it stays in place.

  8. 8

Slide the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the crumble top turns golden brown and you can see the apple juice bubbling at the edges.

  9. 9

Remove the crumble from the oven using oven mitts and set it on a heat-safe surface to cool for 3 to 5 minutes before serving.
