Ingredients

  • 4 links bratwurst sausages
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 1 cup sauerkraut, drained
  • ½ cup beer (lager or pilsner) or water
  • 3 tbsp whole-grain mustard
  • ½ tsp brown sugar

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until deep golden and very soft, about 8 minutes.

  2. 2

Push onions to the side. Sear bratwurst on both sides until browned, about 3 minutes per side. You'll hear a steady sizzle.

  3. 3

Add sauerkraut, beer, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt. Stir gently to combine everything in the pan.

  4. 4

Simmer until bratwurst is cooked through and sauerkraut is heated, about 4 minutes. Internal temp should reach 160°F.

  5. 5

Divide bratwurst and toppings between plates. Serve with mustard on the side.
