Ingredients

  • ½ lb ground beef
  • 12 sheets phyllo or wonton wrappers
  • ¼ medium yellow onion, minced
  • 2 whole fresh chili peppers (serrano or jalapeño), minced
  • 2 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 3 tbsp neutral cooking oil

Instructions

  1. 1

Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium-high with minced onion and half the chili, breaking up meat, ~5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then cool slightly.

  2. 2

Lay one wrapper flat. Place 1 tbsp beef filling in the lower-left corner and fold into a triangle, sealing edges with a dab of water.

  3. 3

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Pan-fry triangles in batches, ~90 seconds per side, until golden and crispy.

  4. 4

Toss cabbage with remaining minced chili and a pinch of salt. Serve sambusas hot with the cabbage slaw on the side.
