Ingredients

  • 1 whole yellow onion, large
  • 3 cups oil for frying
  • 1 pinch salt
  • ½ cup dipping sauce (ranch, sriracha mayo, or ketchup)

Instructions

  1. 1

Cut the root end off the onion, leaving the stem intact, then peel away the papery skin.

  2. 2

Cut thin slices from the top down, stopping 1/2 inch from the root, then rotate and slice again to create a blooming pattern.

  3. 3

Heat oil in a deep pot or skillet to 350°F, then carefully lower the onion root-end-first into the hot oil.

  4. 4

Fry for 6–8 minutes, gently turning halfway, until all petals are golden brown and crispy.

  5. 5

Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels, then season with salt.

  6. 6

Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
