Creamy Kaymak with Crispy Bread

Kaymak is a silky Balkan clotted cream, traditionally served warm with honey and bread. This 15-minute version uses heavy cream simmered gently until it thickens into a luxurious, spoonable cream—no special dairy needed.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 1 loaf bread (crusty or pita)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ tsp sea salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Pour cream and milk into a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over medium until small bubbles form at the edge, ~5 minutes.

  2. 2

Reduce heat to low and simmer gently without stirring for 10 minutes. The surface will wrinkle and thicken.

  3. 3

Slice bread into thick pieces. Heat butter in a skillet over medium-high until golden, then toast bread 1 minute per side.

  4. 4

Remove cream from heat. Stir in honey and salt until just combined—do not overwork it.

  5. 5

Transfer cream to a serving bowl. Spoon or dollop onto warm bread. Serve immediately.
