Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 6 tbsp butter, cold and cubed
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 1 whole egg
  • ¼ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

  3. 3

Add cold butter cubes and cut into flour using your fingertips until mixture resembles coarse sand.

  4. 4

Whisk egg and milk together in a small bowl until combined.

  5. 5

Pour egg-milk mixture into flour mixture and stir until a shaggy dough just forms. Do not overmix.

  6. 6

Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently pat into a 1-inch-thick disk.

  7. 7

Cut disk into 8 wedges using a sharp knife. Transfer to prepared baking sheet.

  8. 8

Bake 12–14 minutes until tops are light golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  9. 9

Cool on baking sheet 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
