Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs ground beef
- 3 whole dried chiles (guajillo or ancho), stemmed and seeded
- 1 can (14.5 oz) canned crushed tomatoes
- ½ cup beef broth
- ½ whole white onion
- 1 tsp cumin

Tear dried chiles into pieces. Pour 1/2 cup boiling water over them and let soak 3 minutes until soft.

Blend softened chiles with their soaking liquid until smooth. Press through a fine sieve into a bowl; discard solids.

Brown ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high, breaking it up with a spoon, until no pink remains, about 6 minutes.

Add finely diced onion to the beef, stir, and cook until onion softens, about 2 minutes.
