Ingredients
- 2 whole dark bread rolls
- 4 whole lettuce leaves
- 1 medium tomato
- ½ cup shredded cheese
- 4 oz cooked meat (e.g., chicken or beef)
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Instructions
- 1
Slice the 2 dark bread rolls in half horizontally. If you like, toast the cut sides in a dry skillet over medium heat until golden, about 2 minutes.
- 2
Spread 1 tbsp mayonnaise on the bottom half of each roll. Season with a pinch of the salt and black pepper.
- 3
Layer 2 lettuce leaves on each bottom half, folding to fit. Slice the 1 tomato into thin rounds and arrange over the lettuce.
- 4
If using meat, place 2 oz of cooked meat on each sandwich, folding to fit. Sprinkle 1/4 cup shredded cheese over the meat on each.
- 5
Close the sandwiches with the top halves. Press gently and serve immediately, or wrap in foil and toast in a skillet over medium heat for 3-4 minutes until the cheese melts.
- 6
Cut each sandwich in half if desired and serve warm or at room temperature.
