Ingredients
- 2 cups sticky rice
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup coconut milk
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 large pieces banana leaves
- 4 pieces kitchen twine
Instructions
- 1
Rinse the 2 cups sticky rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- 2
Drain the soaked rice and mix with 1 cup coconut milk and 0.5 teaspoon salt in a bowl.
- 3
Cut 4 banana leaves into 12-inch squares. Briefly pass each over a flame or dip in hot water to make them pliable.
- 4
Place about 0.5 cup of the rice mixture in the center of each leaf. Fold the sides over the rice to form a tight parcel, then fold the ends under.
- 5
Tie each parcel securely with kitchen twine, making sure the rice is snug but not too tight.
- 6
Place the parcels in a steamer basket over boiling water. Steam for 45-50 minutes, until the rice is tender and translucent.
- 7
Remove the parcels from the steamer and let them rest for 5 minutes. Unwrap and serve warm.
