Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons coarse salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Dissolve yeast and brown sugar in warm water; let sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.

  2. 2

Mix in flour and melted butter until a dough forms; knead for 5 minutes until smooth.

  3. 3

Cover and let rise in a warm spot until doubled, about 1 hour.

  4. 4

Punch down dough; divide into 8 pieces and roll each into a 20-inch rope.

  5. 5

Shape each rope into a U, twist the ends, and press down to form a pretzel.

  6. 6

Boil 8 cups water with baking soda; dip each pretzel for 30 seconds, then drain.

  7. 7

Place on a baking sheet, sprinkle with coarse salt, and bake at 425°F for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

  8. 8

Cool on a rack for 5 minutes before serving.
