Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 8 slices bread
  • 4 slices cheese
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1

Thinly slice the 1 large onion. Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat, add the onion, and cook until soft and golden, about 10 minutes. Set aside.

  2. 2

Divide the 1 lb ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties. Season both sides with the 0.5 tsp salt and 0.25 tsp black pepper.

  3. 3

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through (internal temperature 160°F). Remove and set aside.

  4. 4

Butter one side of each of the 8 bread slices with the remaining 1 tbsp butter. Place 4 slices buttered-side down on the skillet.

  5. 5

Top each bread slice with 1 slice of cheese, a cooked patty, and a quarter of the caramelized onions. Cover with the remaining bread slices, buttered-side up.

  6. 6

Cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted. Serve hot.
