Ingredients

  • 8 slices bread (white or brioche, cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 1 cup ghee or vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¾ cup water
  • 4 whole green cardamom pods, bruised
  • ½ cup condensed milk
  • ¼ cup mixed nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachios, chopped)

    Combine sugar, water, and cardamom in a saucepan over medium-high heat.

    Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves, then simmer 5 minutes until syrup thickens slightly.

    Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature, then discard cardamom pods.

    Heat ghee in a deep skillet over medium-high heat until a bread cube sizzles immediately when dropped in.

    Working in batches, fry bread cubes until deep golden brown on all sides, about 3-4 minutes per batch.
