Ingredients
- 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup butter
- 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 large eggs
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup mixed seeds (sesame, poppy, sunflower)
Instructions
- 1
Warm 1 cup milk and 1/2 cup butter together until butter melts and mixture is lukewarm (about 110°F). Remove from heat.
- 2
In a large bowl, combine 1/2 cup sugar, 2.25 teaspoons yeast, and the warm milk-butter mixture. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 3
Beat in 3 eggs, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and gradually add 3.5 cups flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- 4
Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1-1.5 hours until doubled.
- 5
Punch down the dough, divide into 3 equal pieces, and roll each into a long rope. Braid the ropes together and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- 6
Cover the braid loosely and let rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy. Brush with beaten egg (optional) and sprinkle with 1/4 cup mixed seeds.
- 7
Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped. Cool on a rack before slicing.
