Ingredients
- 1 lb calamari rings
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 whole lemon
Instructions
- 1
Pat the 1 lb calamari rings dry with paper towels. In a shallow bowl, mix 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp black pepper. Dredge the calamari in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
- 2
Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the calamari in a single layer (work in batches if needed) and fry until golden and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and set aside on a plate.
- 3
Reduce heat to medium. Add the remaining 1 tbsp olive oil and 2 minced garlic cloves to the same skillet. Cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
- 4
Pour in the 15 oz can of crushed tomatoes, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp black pepper. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 5
Add the fried calamari to the sauce and toss to coat. Cook for 1 minute to warm through.
- 6
Serve immediately, garnished with lemon wedges and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes if desired.
- 7
Enjoy hot, with crusty bread if you like.
