Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup cornmeal
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 3 cups vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

    Mix flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and a pinch of salt in a bowl.

    Pour in milk and stir until a thick, sticky dough forms — it should hold together but not be stiff.

    Heat oil in a heavy skillet or pot to 350°F over medium-high heat, about 5 minutes.

    Using two spoons, scoop dough into oblong shapes and carefully slide them into the hot oil.

    Fry 3–4 minutes per side until deep golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

    Transfer to paper towels to drain. Serve hot, plain or with hot sauce or honey on the side.
