Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • ½ pound ground pork
  • 2 stalks green onions
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, mix 2 cups flour, 1 tsp yeast, and 1 tbsp sugar. Gradually add 3/4 cup warm water, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.

  2. 2

Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, until doubled in size.

  3. 3

While dough rises, make the filling: combine 1/2 lb ground pork, 2 chopped green onions, 1 tbsp soy sauce, and 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a bowl. Mix well and set aside.

  4. 4

Punch down the risen dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 4-inch circle, keeping the center thicker than the edges.

  5. 5

Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each circle. Pleat the edges to seal the bun, twisting the top to close. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.

  6. 6

Arrange buns on parchment-lined steamer baskets, leaving space between them. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes, until slightly puffed.

  7. 7

Steam over boiling water for 12 minutes, until the buns are fluffy and cooked through. Serve warm.
