Ingredients
- 1 cup glutinous (sticky) rice
- ¾ cup coconut milk
- 3 tbsp granulated sugar
- ¼ tsp salt
- 4 pieces (6x8 inch) banana leaves (fresh or thawed frozen)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds (white or black, optional)
Instructions
- 1
Rinse sticky rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear, about 1 minute.
- 2
Heat coconut milk, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves, ~2 minutes.
- 3
Stir the warm coconut mixture into the drained rice until evenly coated.
- 4
Divide the rice among banana leaf pieces, placing a spoonful in the center of each leaf. Fold the leaf like an envelope to seal the packet.
- 5
Fill a pot with 1 inch of water and bring to a boil. Set a steamer basket inside, then place the packets in the basket, folded side up.
- 6
Cover and steam for 10 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the leaves smell fragrant. Unfold carefully and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.
