Ingredients
- 6 pieces store-bought tamales (chicken, cheese, or pork)
- 2 cups whole milk
- ⅓ cup masa harina (corn flour for atole)
- 2 tbsp piloncillo or brown sugar
- 1 piece cinnamon stick
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp salt
Instructions
- 1
Unwrap tamales and stand them upright in a skillet with 1/2 cup water on the bottom. Cover and steam over medium-high heat, 5 minutes.
- 2
While tamales steam, pour milk into a separate pot. Add masa harina, piloncillo, cinnamon stick, and salt. Whisk until smooth.
- 3
Heat the atole over medium, stirring constantly, until it steams and thickens slightly, about 4 minutes. The mixture should coat a spoon lightly.
- 4
Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness with more piloncillo if needed.
- 5
Transfer hot tamales to bowls. Pour warm atole around and over the tamales. Serve immediately.
