Ingredients

  • 1.2 lb white fish fillets (cod, halibut, or haddock)
  • 4 tbsp butter, divided
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 lb pre-boiled or roasted baby potatoes
  • 2 cups crusty bread, torn into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tbsp jam or preserves (any berry or fruit)

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 425°F. Spread fish fillets in a buttered 9x13 baking dish; season with salt and pepper.

  2. 2

Melt 2 tbsp butter in a small saucepan over medium. Whisk in flour for 1 minute until fragrant.

  3. 3

Slowly pour in milk, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens, about 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

  4. 4

Pour white sauce over the fish. Arrange potatoes around and on top of each fillet.

  5. 5

Toss bread pieces with remaining 2 tbsp melted butter and jam until coated; scatter over the gratin.

  6. 6

Bake until fish flakes easily and topping is golden-brown, 12–15 minutes. Serve hot.
