Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • ½ teaspoon instant yeast
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¾ cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pistachios

Instructions

  1. 1

Mix warm water, instant yeast, and 0.5 teaspoon sugar in a bowl. Let sit 5 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Pour yeast mixture and olive oil into flour and stir until a soft dough forms.

  3. 3

Knead dough in the bowl for 3-4 minutes until smooth. Cover with a damp towel and let rest 10 minutes.

  4. 4

Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

Using wet hands, pinch off walnut-sized pieces of dough and gently drop into hot oil. Fry in small batches, about 4-5 puffs at a time.

  6. 6

Fry for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  7. 7

Warm honey in a small saucepan over low heat.

  8. 8

Stack warm loukoumades in a serving bowl or plate, drizzle generously with warm honey, and sprinkle with cinnamon and nuts. Serve immediately while still warm.
