Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 10 oz small pasta (hörnli or ditalini)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 14.5 oz canned crushed tomatoes
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1 tsp dried)
- ½ cup panko breadcrumbs

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat until shimmering.

Add diced onion and cook until softened and golden, ~3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned with no pink, ~6 minutes.

Stir in crushed tomatoes, broth, and thyme. Bring to a simmer.

Add pasta directly to the pan and stir well. Simmer uncovered until pasta is tender, ~10 minutes.

Taste and season with salt and pepper. Discard thyme sprigs if using fresh.

In a small bowl, toss panko with 2 tablespoons melted butter and a pinch of salt.

Sprinkle breadcrumb mixture evenly over the surface of the pasta.

Place under the broiler for 2–3 minutes until breadcrumbs turn golden brown. Watch closely.
