Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the 1 tbsp yeast and 1 tbsp of the sugar in 1/4 cup warm milk. Let sit until frothy, about 5 minutes.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, mix the 2 cups flour, remaining 3 tbsp sugar, and 1/4 tsp salt. Add the yeast mixture, remaining 1/4 cup milk, and 1 egg. Stir until a soft dough forms.

  3. 3

Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth. Press into a greased 9x13-inch pan. Cover and let rise in a warm spot for 15 minutes.

  4. 4

Preheat oven to 375°F. Using your finger, make dimples all over the dough. Dot with the 1/2 cup butter (cut into small pieces) and sprinkle with 2 tbsp sugar.

  5. 5

Bake until golden brown and puffed, about 20 minutes. Let cool slightly before cutting into squares.
