Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 whole egg yolk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons vanilla sugar (or granulated sugar mixed with 1 tsp vanilla extract)

Instructions

  1. 1

Set your oven to 350°F and wait for the indicator light or beep to tell you it has finished heating, about 10 minutes.

  2. 2

Place the softened butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl and use an electric mixer on medium speed to beat them together until the mixture looks pale and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

  3. 3

Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix on medium speed until everything is combined and smooth, about 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Add the flour to the bowl and use a wooden spoon to stir until a soft dough forms and no dry flour remains, about 1 minute.

  5. 5

Pinch off a piece of dough about the size of a walnut and roll it between your palms into a rope about 3 inches long and as thick as a pencil.

  6. 6

Bend the rope into a crescent shape — like the moon — and place it on an ungreased baking sheet about 1 inch away from the next cookie.

  7. 7

Repeat the pinching, rolling, and bending steps with the remaining dough until all of it is shaped into crescents on the baking sheet.

  8. 8

Slide the baking sheet into the preheated oven and bake until the cookies are light golden brown on the bottom and just set on top, about 12 to 14 minutes.

  9. 9

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool for 2 minutes on the hot sheet so they firm up slightly.

  10. 10

While the cookies are still warm, sprinkle the vanilla sugar evenly over the top of each cookie so it sticks to the buttery surface.

  11. 11

Transfer the cookies to a wire cooling rack and let them cool to room temperature before serving, about 10 minutes.
