Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups glutinous rice flour
  • ¾ cup water
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup sweet red bean paste
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, combine 1.5 cups glutinous rice flour, 0.25 tsp salt, and 0.75 cup water. Mix until a soft, pliable dough forms, about 2 minutes.

  2. 2

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 3-4 minutes until smooth. If too sticky, add a little more rice flour; if too dry, add water a teaspoon at a time.

  3. 3

Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten into a disc about 3 inches wide.

  4. 4

Place 1.5 teaspoons of sweet red bean paste in the center of each disc. Fold the edges over the filling and pinch to seal, then roll gently into a smooth ball.

  5. 5

Arrange the balls in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper, leaving 1 inch between them. Steam over boiling water, covered, for 15-20 minutes until the balls are translucent and slightly puffed.

  6. 6

Remove from the steamer and immediately brush each ball with 1 tsp sesame oil to keep them moist and glossy. Serve warm or at room temperature.
