Ingredients
- ½ lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 2 slice American cheese slices
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 2 whole burger buns
- ½ tbsp butter
- 1 serving toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mustard, ketchup)

Divide ground beef into 4 thin patties, each about 2 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick.

Place 1 cheese slice on 2 of the patties. Top with remaining 2 patties and press edges to seal completely.

Season both sides of each burger with salt and pepper.

Butter the cut sides of the buns and set aside.

Heat a skillet over medium-high until it shimmers, ~90 seconds.

Cook burgers 3–4 minutes per side without pressing or moving them. Center cheese should be soft.

Toast the buns in the same skillet until golden, about 1 minute per side.

Place each burger on a bun. Add lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and condiments as desired.

Serve immediately while the cheese is still molten.
