Ingredients

  • ½ lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 2 slice American cheese slices
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 whole burger buns
  • ½ tbsp butter
  • 1 serving toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mustard, ketchup)

Instructions

  1. 1

Divide ground beef into 4 thin patties, each about 2 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick.

  2. 2

Place 1 cheese slice on 2 of the patties. Top with remaining 2 patties and press edges to seal completely.

  3. 3

Season both sides of each burger with salt and pepper.

  4. 4

Butter the cut sides of the buns and set aside.

  5. 5

Heat a skillet over medium-high until it shimmers, ~90 seconds.

  6. 6

Cook burgers 3–4 minutes per side without pressing or moving them. Center cheese should be soft.

  7. 7

Toast the buns in the same skillet until golden, about 1 minute per side.

  8. 8

Place each burger on a bun. Add lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and condiments as desired.

  9. 9

Serve immediately while the cheese is still molten.
