Ingredients

  • 2 teabags black tea bags or loose black tea
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon, combined whole spices (cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, ginger slices)
  • ¾ cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or sugar

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat 1 cup of water in a kettle or pot over medium-high heat until it reaches a rolling boil with large bubbles breaking the surface continuously, about 4–5 minutes.

  2. 2

Add the 2 black tea bags and 1 teaspoon of combined whole spices (cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger) to a mug or small bowl, then carefully pour the boiling water over them.

  3. 3

Let the tea and spices steep in the hot water for 3 minutes without stirring, so the flavors fully release into the water.

  4. 4

Remove the tea bags and spices by lifting them out with a spoon, pressing them gently against the side of the mug to squeeze out the liquid, then discard.

  5. 5

Stir 2 tablespoons of honey or sugar into the hot chai tea until it dissolves completely and the liquid looks uniform and glossy.

  6. 6

Pour the hot spiced tea into a tall glass filled halfway with ice cubes, letting the tea cool and chill as it hits the cold ice.

  7. 7

Pour 0.75 cup of milk (dairy or non-dairy) into the glass over the tea and ice until the glass is nearly full, then stir the mixture with a long spoon until the color is uniform and caramel-toned.

  8. 8

Taste the drink; if it's too strong or sweet, stir in a splash more milk or ice water to your preference.
