Hot Matcha Latte

This is my quiet-morning ritual: a bowl of matcha whisked until it foams like a little green cloud, softened with warm milk and a thread of honey. Make it slowly, and let the first sip be the pause your day begins with.

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp matcha powder
  • ¼ cup hot water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp honey

Instructions

  1. 1

Boil your kettle, then let it rest off the heat for about a minute. Matcha likes water that is hot but not roaring boiling. Water that is too hot turns it bitter and sharp; slightly cooled water keeps it sweet and grassy.

  2. 2

Spoon the matcha powder into a wide bowl or mug. If you have a small sieve, tap the powder through it first. Matcha loves to clump, and sifting is the difference between silk and little green lumps. This small patience pays off in the cup.

  3. 3

Pour the hot water over the powder. Do not add the milk yet. We want to loosen the matcha into a smooth paste on its own first, with nothing to hide behind.

  4. 4

Whisk gently in a quick zig-zag, back and forth like the letter M rather than round in circles. In about 20 to 30 seconds you will see a fine foam rise and the surface turn a bright, even jade with no dry specks left. That soft froth means it is ready.

  5. 5

Warm the milk in a small pot over medium-low heat, or in the microwave for about a minute. You are looking for steaming and a few tiny bubbles at the edge, not a hard boil. When you see faint wisps of steam curling up, take it off the heat.

  6. 6

Stir the honey into the warm milk until it dissolves completely. Warm milk melts honey in seconds; cold milk would leave it sitting stubbornly at the bottom. Taste is personal here, so trust your own sweetness.

  7. 7

Slowly pour the warm, honeyed milk into your whisked matcha. Pour in a thin, steady stream and watch the green bloom up through the pale milk. Give it one gentle stir to marry them.

  8. 8

Sit for a moment before you drink. Let the steam warm your face, take the first slow sip, and notice the honey and the earthy matcha settling together. That quiet is the whole point.
