Ingredients

  • 20 cookies chocolate sandwich cookies
  • 1 box (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 8 oz whipped topping, thawed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup gummy worms
  • ¼ cup candy rocks or crushed candy
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Instructions

  1. 1

Open 20 chocolate sandwich cookies and scoop out the white filling from each cookie half with a small spoon; discard the filling and set the chocolate cookie pieces aside.

  2. 2

Pour 2 cups of cold milk into a large bowl and add 1 box of instant chocolate pudding mix, whisking constantly for 2 minutes until the pudding is thick and no lumps remain.

  3. 3

Fold 8 ounces of thawed whipped topping into the pudding by lifting pudding from the bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula and turning it over the whipped topping; rotate the bowl and repeat until no white streaks are visible.

  4. 4

Place the chocolate cookie pieces in a zip-lock bag and seal it closed, then crush them with a rolling pin or the bottom of a cup until they are the size of coarse sand grains.

  5. 5

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small skillet over low heat for about 1 minute, until it is completely liquid and shimmers.

  6. 6

Add the crushed cookies and 1 tablespoon of sugar to the melted butter, stirring continuously for 30 seconds until the mixture is wet and clumpy like moist dirt.

  7. 7

Spoon half of the pudding-whipped topping mixture into a 9-inch clear glass bowl or a trifle dish, spreading it in an even layer on the bottom.

  8. 8

Scatter half of the warm buttered cookie crumbles over the pudding layer, covering the surface completely.

  9. 9

Top with the remaining pudding-whipped topping mixture, spreading it to the edges so it covers all the crumbles.

  10. 10

Scatter the remaining buttered cookie crumbles across the top, then arrange gummy worms and candy rocks on the surface in whatever pattern you like.

  11. 11

Refrigerate the dirt cake for at least 30 minutes before serving so the layers set and the flavors meld.
