Ingredients
- 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1.5 cups sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- 1
Set the oven to 350°F and wait until the indicator light or beep tells you it has finished heating, about 10 minutes.
- 2
Grease the inside of a 9-inch round cake pan with vegetable oil, coating the bottom and all sides evenly.
- 3
Add the flour, cocoa powder, and sugar to a large mixing bowl.
- 4
Use a wire whisk to stir the dry ingredients together until no cocoa powder lumps remain and the mixture looks uniform brown, about 20 seconds.
- 5
Crack both eggs into a small bowl and whisk them together with a fork until the yolk and white are completely blended, about 10 seconds.
- 6
Pour the whisked eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract into the dry ingredients.
- 7
Use a wooden spoon to stir the mixture in the center of the bowl, scraping down the sides every few strokes, until no streaks of dry ingredients remain and the batter looks smooth, about 1 minute.
- 8
Pour the batter into the prepared pan, tilting and tapping the pan gently so the batter spreads evenly to the edges.
- 9
Slide the pan onto the middle oven rack and set a timer for 30 minutes.
- 10
When the timer sounds, insert a toothpick into the center of the cake; it should come out with just a few moist crumbs clinging to it, not wet batter.
- 11
Remove the pan from the oven using oven mitts and place it on a heat-safe surface to cool for 15 minutes.
- 12
Run a thin knife around the inside edge of the pan to loosen the cake, then place a serving plate upside down on top of the pan and flip both together so the cake slides out onto the plate.
