Ingredients

  • ½ lb ground beef
  • ½ medium yellow onion
  • ¼ cup green olives, pitted
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 3 tbsp hot honey (or honey + hot sauce)
  • 12 count store-bought empanada or wonton wrappers
  • 2 cups neutral oil for frying
  • 1 lime lime wedges, for serving

Instructions

  1. 1

Finely dice the onion. Heat 1 tbsp neutral oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.

  2. 2

Add onion and cook until soft, ~3 minutes. Add ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon.

  3. 3

Cook beef until no pink remains, ~4 minutes. Stir in olives and cilantro, then let cool slightly.

  4. 4

Spoon 1 tbsp filling onto the center of each wrapper. Fold into a triangle, pressing edges to seal.

  5. 5

Heat 2 cups oil in a heavy pot to 350°F. Working in batches, fry pastels until golden, ~90 seconds per side.

  6. 6

Drain on paper towels. Drizzle with hot honey, serve with lime wedges.
