Ingredients

  • 1 jar (about 12 oz) jarred herring fillets in brine
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 tbsp, chopped fresh dill
  • 1 medium apple (granny smith or similar)

Instructions

  1. 1

Slice the onion into thin half-moons. Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat and cook onion, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft, about 8 minutes.

  2. 2

Drain the herring and cut each fillet into 1-inch pieces. Slice the apple into thin matchsticks.

  3. 3

Add sour cream and 2 tbsp water to the skillet with the onion, stirring until smooth and warm, about 1 minute.

  4. 4

Remove from heat. Fold in the herring pieces, apple, and fresh dill. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

  5. 5

Serve warm or at room temperature with crusty rye bread or boiled potatoes on the side.
