Ingredients
- 1 jar (about 12 oz) jarred herring fillets in brine
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 large yellow onion
- 2 tbsp, chopped fresh dill
- 1 medium apple (granny smith or similar)

Slice the onion into thin half-moons. Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat and cook onion, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft, about 8 minutes.

Drain the herring and cut each fillet into 1-inch pieces. Slice the apple into thin matchsticks.

Add sour cream and 2 tbsp water to the skillet with the onion, stirring until smooth and warm, about 1 minute.

Remove from heat. Fold in the herring pieces, apple, and fresh dill. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

Serve warm or at room temperature with crusty rye bread or boiled potatoes on the side.
