Ingredients

  • 4 slices bread, white or wheat
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • ¼ teaspoon salt and pepper

    Spread 0.5 tablespoon of softened butter evenly across one side of all four bread slices, coating them like you are painting with a brush until the entire side is covered.

    Place a skillet over medium heat and wait until a drop of water sizzles and evaporates on contact, about 90 seconds—the pan is now ready.

    Lay one bread slice butter-side down in the skillet and press it gently so the buttered side touches the hot surface.

    Place two slices of cheddar cheese on top of the bread slice in the pan, slightly overlapping them to cover most of the bread surface.

    Lay the second bread slice on top of the cheese, butter-side up, pressing down gently so the cheese is sandwiched between the two bread slices.

    Cook for 3 to 4 minutes without moving the sandwich—the bottom bread should turn the color of warm honey with golden-brown edges when you lift one corner to peek.

    Slide a spatula under the sandwich, flip it over in one smooth motion, and immediately return it to the pan.

    Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes until the second side is the same golden-brown color as the first side and the cheese inside is fully melted and soft.

    Transfer the sandwich to a cutting board and let it rest for 30 seconds so the cheese sets slightly inside, making it easier to handle.

    Cut the sandwich diagonally from corner to corner, creating two triangles, and serve immediately while the cheese is still warm and gooey.

    Repeat steps 3–10 with the remaining two bread slices and two cheese slices to make the second sandwich.
