Ingredients

  • ½ lb ground beef
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ⅛ tsp black pepper
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese slices
  • 2 whole hamburger buns
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 4 slices dill pickle slices
  • ¼ whole white onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 2 leaves lettuce leaves
  • 2 slices tomato slices

Instructions

  1. 1

Divide ground beef into two equal portions and gently form into patties about 0.75 inches thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each with your thumb. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.

  2. 2

Slice the onion into thin rings and arrange on a plate with pickle slices nearby. Butter the insides of the hamburger buns.

  3. 3

Heat a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat until very hot, about 2 minutes. Place patties in the skillet and cook without moving for 3-4 minutes until a golden crust forms.

  4. 4

Flip patties carefully and immediately top each with a slice of cheddar cheese. Cook for 3-4 minutes more until cheese is melted and internal temperature reaches 160°F.

  5. 5

In the last minute of cooking, place buns cut-side down in the skillet to toast lightly, about 1-2 minutes, until golden brown.

  6. 6

Spread mustard on the bottom bun and ketchup on the top bun. Layer lettuce, tomato slice, cheese-topped patty, pickles, and onion on the bottom bun.

  7. 7

Close with the top bun and serve immediately with your favorite sides.
