Ingredients
- 6 oz brioche or stale white bread, cut into 0.5-inch cubes
- 3 tbsp butter, divided
- 1.5 cups whole milk
- 3 large eggs
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ cup dried currants or raisins

Preheat broiler. Butter a shallow baking dish (8x8 or similar) with 0.5 tbsp butter.

Whisk eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla in a bowl until smooth. Stir in currants.

Spread bread cubes in baking dish. Pour custard over evenly, pressing bread gently to absorb.

Dot top with remaining 2.5 tbsp butter in small flakes. Let sit 5 minutes for bread to soak.

Broil 4–6 inches from heat until top is golden brown and custard just sets, 6–8 minutes.

Cool 2 minutes. Serve warm in bowls with a spoon — custard will be soft and jammy.
