Ingredients

  • ¾ cup butter
  • 1.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1.75 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • ⅛ tsp black pepper

Instructions

    Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, swirling occasionally, ~6 minutes.

    Continue cooking until the foam subsides and solids turn golden brown and fragrant, ~2 minutes more.

    Pour into a bowl, scraping up all the browned bits. Let cool for 5 minutes.

    Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

    Whisk cooled brown butter with brown sugar until combined, then beat in the egg and vanilla.

    In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.

    Fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.

    Spread batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top.

    Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center has just a few moist crumbs, 20–22 minutes.
