Ingredients

  • 6 slices white bread, crusts removed
  • 3 tbsp butter, softened
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 whole eggs
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  2. 2

Butter both sides of each bread slice generously. Cut into quarters.

  3. 3

Whisk eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth.

  4. 4

Arrange bread quarters in the baking dish, butter-side up.

  5. 5

Pour custard mixture over bread. Let soak 5 minutes so bread absorbs liquid.

  6. 6

Bake until custard sets but surface still jiggles slightly, ~35 minutes.

  7. 7

Cool 5 minutes. Serve warm, with a spoon to catch the custardy center.
