Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef sirloin or chuck steak
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup calamansi or lemon juice
  • 2 whole large yellow onions
  • 4 whole garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ½ cup water

Instructions

  1. 1

Slice beef against the grain into thin strips about 0.25-inch thick. Slice onions into rings.

  2. 2

In a bowl, combine soy sauce, calamansi juice, minced garlic, and black pepper. Set marinade aside.

  3. 3

Heat oil in a 12-inch skillet over high heat. Working in batches, sear beef strips 1-2 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.

  4. 4

Add onion rings to the same skillet and cook 2-3 minutes until starting to soften, stirring occasionally.

  5. 5

Return beef to skillet and pour in marinade and water. Bring to simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and braise 10-15 minutes until beef is tender and sauce thickens slightly.

  6. 6

Taste and adjust seasoning with additional soy sauce or calamansi juice if desired. Serve over steamed white rice.
