Ingredients

  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup mirin
  • ¼ cup sake
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 lbs beef sirloin or rib-eye, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 3 stalks scallions, chopped
  • 2 cups rice, cooked
  • 8 leaves lettuce leaves

Instructions

  1. 1

In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, mirin, sake, sesame oil, minced garlic, minced ginger, and brown sugar. Set the sauce aside.

  2. 2

Slice the beef very thinly (ask the butcher or partially freeze the meat for 1-2 hours to make slicing easier).

  3. 3

Arrange the beef slices on a platter. Prepare all serving ingredients and set them within reach.

  4. 4

Heat a tabletop grill, griddle, or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the cooking surface.

  5. 5

Working in batches, place beef slices on the hot grill. Cook for 20-30 seconds per side until lightly browned but still rare in the center.

  6. 6

Dip the cooked beef slices into the yakiniku sauce or brush sauce onto the meat.

  7. 7

Wrap sauce-coated beef in lettuce leaves or serve over rice.

  8. 8

Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped scallions. Repeat cooking and serving until all beef is cooked.
