Ingredients

  • ½ lb ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 3 oz kajmak or sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 whole hamburger buns

Instructions

    Slice the onion into thin rings. Heat butter in a skillet over medium and cook onions until golden and soft, stirring occasionally, ~6 minutes.

    Divide beef into four thin patties about 3 inches across. Season two patties with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic.

    Place cheese and a pinch of caramelized onions on one seasoned patty. Top with the second seasoned patty and press edges to seal.

    Heat 1 tbsp oil in the skillet over medium-high. Sear the stuffed patty 3 minutes per side without moving—edges should brown and crisp.

    Toast buns cut-side down in the residual pan heat for 45 seconds until light golden.

    Place patty on bottom bun, top with remaining caramelized onions, then crown bun. Serve immediately.
