Ingredients
- 1 ½ pound squid (cleaned and sliced into rings)
- 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ¼ cup cornstarch
- 1 ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 vegetable oil for frying
- 1 ½ cup marinara sauce
- 1 lemon wedges (optional)
Instructions
- 1
Pat the squid rings dry with paper towels. Removing moisture helps the coating stick and keeps the oil from splattering.
- 2
In a bowl combine flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.
- 3
Place the squid rings into the flour mixture and toss until all pieces are evenly coated.
- 4
Pour about 1½ inches of vegetable oil into a deep pan. Heat the oil over medium-high heat to about 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Carefully place a small batch of squid rings into the oil. Fry for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden. Do not overcrowd the pan.
- 6
Remove the calamari with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate.
- 7
Arrange the fried calamari on a plate and place marinara sauce in a small bowl in the center for dipping.
