CookSnap ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data when you use the CookSnap mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service").
By using CookSnap, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- Account information: When you sign up, we collect your email address, display name, and username. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email from those providers.
- Profile information: Avatar photos, bio, dietary preferences, nutrition goals, ingredient exclusions, and display customizations you set in the app.
- Meal content: Recipes you save, meals you cook, folders you create, personal notes you write on meals, and meal ratings.
- Community content: Posts, comments, reactions, and meal submissions you publish or submit.
- Ingredients: Ingredients you scan, enter manually, or capture via camera during cooking sessions.
- Photos: Photos you upload for meal submissions or profile avatars.
- Nutrition data: Daily nutrition logs, macro targets, goal profiles, and fasting plans you configure.
- Search history: Queries you type into the in-app search.
- Shopping lists: Items you add to your shopping list.
1.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Usage data: Features you use, screens you visit, buttons you tap, and interactions with meals and community content.
- Scan sessions: Records of ingredient capture sessions including detected ingredients.
- Streak and achievement data: Your cooking streak, quest progress, and achievement history.
- Device information: Device type, operating system version, and app version.
- Log data: Error logs and performance data to help us fix bugs.
1.3 Information from Third Parties
- Google / Apple Sign In: If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email address from those services.
- Barcode data: When you scan a product barcode, we query OpenFoodFacts, an open-source database, to identify the ingredient.
- Recipe data: We use the Spoonacular API to supplement our internal recipe library with additional recipe and nutrition information.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Create and manage your account
- Personalize meal recommendations based on your dietary preferences, goals, and saved meals
- Power ingredient scanning and AI-based meal generation
- Display your profile and content to other users in the community
- Track your cooking streaks, achievements, and progression
- Process your Pro subscription through Apple's in-app purchase system
- Send transactional emails (account verification, password reset)
- Detect and prevent abuse, spam, and violations of our Terms
- Improve the app by understanding how features are used
- Respond to support requests
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.
3. How We Share Your Information
3.1 Public Content
If you post to the CookSnap community, submit meals for publication, or set your profile to public, that content is visible to other users of the app. This includes your display name, avatar, posts, and published meals.
3.2 Service Providers
We share data with third-party services that help us operate CookSnap:

These providers only process your data as necessary to provide their services to us. They are not permitted to use your data for their own purposes.
3.3 Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of CookSnap, our users, or the public.
3.4 Business Transfers
If CookSnap is acquired or merges with another company, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your data is transferred and subject to a different privacy policy.
4. Data Retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we permanently delete your profile, meals, posts, nutrition data, and all associated personal data within 30 days. Some anonymized, non-identifiable data may be retained for analytics purposes.
A deletion audit log is maintained for legal compliance purposes but does not contain personal content.
5. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights:
- Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction: Request that we correct inaccurate data
- Deletion: Request that we delete your account and all associated data (also available directly in the app under Settings → Delete Account)
- Portability: Request your data in a portable format
- Objection: Object to certain types of data processing

6. Children's Privacy
CookSnap is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us at hi@cooksnapapp.com and we will promptly delete the account and associated data.
Users between 13 and 18 may use CookSnap with appropriate parental awareness.
7. Data Security
We take the security of your data seriously. We use industry-standard protections including:
- Encrypted connections (TLS) for all data in transit
- Row-level security policies on our database to ensure users can only access their own data
- Encrypted storage for sensitive credentials
- Regular security audits of our infrastructure
No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. International Data Transfers
CookSnap is operated from the United States. If you are located outside the United States, your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States. By using CookSnap, you consent to this transfer.
9. Third-Party Links
The app may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, by sending you an email notification. Your continued use of CookSnap after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
